In math form...

Let E be Erin's current age and W be Warren's current age.

The first sentence (Erin's age is 3 times Warren's) translates to:
E = 3 x W

The second sentence (In 4 years, she will be twice as old as he will be) becomes:

E+4 = 2 x (W+4)

So, if we replace E in the second equation with 3xW, we get:

(3 x W) + 4 = 2 x (W + 4)

Expand the right hand side:
(3 x W) + 4 = (2 x W) + 8

Subtract (2xW) from both sides:
W +4 = 8

Subtract 4 from both sides:
W = 4

And going back to first equation:
E = 3 x W
E = 3 x 4
E = 12

Therefore, Erin is currently 12 and Warren is currently 4.

Erin is 12, Warren is 4; therefore Erin is 3x the age of Warren now. In 4 yrs Erin will be 16 and Warren 8, making Erin twice the age of Warren in 4 years.

3x=Erin's age
x=Warren's age

3x+4=2(x+4)
3x+4=2x+8
x+4=8
x=4
3(4)=12

Warren is 4 and Erin is 12.
