My friend's daughter did a study on how long cut flowers last. She found that with identical treatment, they will last a varying number of days depending on where she purchased them. How they were treated and how old they were were what made the difference.
Unfortunately, there is no way to measure these factors before you buy. Some stores will sell or give you some powder to put into the water that might help. I think sugar helps, but you would have to do a controlled study to know if it really was the sugar or if it was the previous handling and age as stated above.

no longer a florist, yet i understand a sturdy additive-loose trick. Fill the sink with water, and submerge the decrease ends. Trim them off some inches bigger. Fill the vase with water from the sink, and place the plant life contained in the vase devoid of eliminating them from the water. by keeping the freshly decrease ends underwater you're scuffling with any air from being trapped contained in the water-drawing vessels contained in the stem. while you're showing abode grown plant life, leave a leaf or 2 close to the ideal. The leaves transpire (sweat, basically), which creates a siphon-like action that facilitates draw water into the stem.

To prolong "bulb" type flowers such as tulips, iris, the dutch use 3 cups water..1 tbsp vodka, keeps the water clear of bacteria and the flowers standing tall... and apparently works well with other types of cut flowers

Cut the stems and stick them immediately in water that has just a few drops of bleach in it.
