They are both great movies, but so different. You are confused because you really shouldn't be comparing the two. Out of the two, I would have to say Boyz N the Hood is my favorite, but Edward Norton was HOT in American History X.

Boyz N The Hood was not a gangsta crime drama. You miss the point of the movie.
Neither was American History X.

I really wouldn't consider American History X a gangsta crime drama, so my answered would have to be Boyz n the hood.

I love both these movies a lot. But Boyz N the Hood is the better movie because it humanizes these young men that so many people see an inhuman in every way..
and yes American history X is a gangster movie.. Since when are skinheads not gangsters? Both very good movies.

American History X has nothing to do with "gangstas," thank you, so Boyz N the Hood wins this contest, but Menace II Society obliterates BNTH with its brilliant, nihilistic amorality.

Boyz N the Hood! Hands Down! Don't get me wrong....X was a good flick, but Boyz is a classic. Who do you know that quotes lines from "American History X"? But I'll tell you what, "WHAT YOU HIT ME FOR?....HUH!?! WHAT YOU HIT ME FOR?!?" "Ay Dough, what she hit your for?" "Man shut up Chris!"....
And let's not forget the classic...."RICKYYYYYYYYYYYY!"
