THERE are lots of people who don't know THEIR grammar, or THEY'RE just plain lazy.
TO further expain the problem, the words THERE and TO are TWO words that have TOO many ways to spell them.

Our popular culture distorts our language, and turns normal speaking into something unrecognizable with every new generation.
However, this is not something that is new, or something that can be stopped.
I do agree we need to have better education standards, so that our culture will be as intelligent as possible, and will have better chances of being more productive in society by having the advantages of getting better jobs, and not having to resort to crime.
With that being said, you must take a look at the history not only of our nation, but also of other nations currently progressing today, and nations and cultures of the past.
If you visit London, a culture older than ours, you will find the same thing to be true. There is a "kings english" spoken, and there is also a "cockney english" spoken, this has to do with the educational background, and the economic background of each person. What is communicated in written form, and what is communicated in spoken form will, and always have been, very, very different. If you look at how something is spelled on paper, and how something is pronounced, it will be very different.
Just look at the use of the word "Trynna" in popular culture today in America. One of my pet peeves.
That is not even a real word, and it is used incorrectly, yet it is still used. This is the case with almost every word in our English language.

They're too lazy to correct it (if they know the difference) or too dumb (if they don't.)
You're absolutely correct. In my day, to apply for cashier's positions at BK's or Micky D's, one had to take impromptu arithmetic exams with the applications. Nowadays, the POS terminals have pictures of burgers and fries on the keyboards. I ordered a meal once which totaled 12.17. I handed the cashier 22.25 and she called the manager over for assistance!
However, after asking her age, I asked her out for a date.
Dirty old geezers rule!

e.s.l. is a huge part of the problem. you used to have extra classes to teach new citizens how to speak english, now we just throw them into the classroom and the poor teacher is spending more time correcting their english than she is with the rest of the kids teaching the required curriculum. [i'm sure i spelled that one wrong] lol.
apparently the english language is difficult to learn as we have many words that have double meanings. ie: read. 'i already read the paper' and 'i will read the paper'
the learning english issue is just one of many that ties up the teacher's time, and she can't get through her days' lessons!
and we don't seem to bother correcting little language errors.
if you listen to people you will hear them saying 'two times' instead of 'twice'. ie: i went to the movie two times. instead of
i went to the movie twice. [one of my little pet peeves.]
we are lucky to live in such a great country but instead of our new citizens bringing their standards up to our country's standards and our way of life, [which by the way they all say they came here for a better life], we are allowing our customs and manners to be brought down to a lower level to suit them.
thats just this girl's opinion!

It is because they, for the most part, are lazy dumb idiots.
Stupidity abounds in American society but, only because we as a nation allow it.
These people would rather look like DUMB ASSES, than to actually learn the correct way and prove the rest of us wrong.

My guess would be that so many people do not pay attention in school....or they smoke too much pot or do too many drugs and lose the brain cells that that information was stored in.

Because they weren't pushed to learn things like you and I probably were. If you don't care, you won't learn too much of anything.

people don't care anymore. Besides, there should only be one type of there and to, no others, you can understand what it means with the context of the sentence.
