Yes absolutely. But instead of Spandau Ballet how about these? -

I say England's new anthem should be - God Save The Queen by The Sex Pistols.

Scotland's should be - I'm gonna be (500 miles) by The Proclaimers.

And Wales' should be - Sex Bomb by Tom Jones.

lol :-)

At the risk of being a boring old f***, I say leave it alone. It's only boring if it's played badly or sung badly.
I don't think it's outdated either.
We are still, just about, a Christian country and the queen (or future King) is still the Head of the Church of England. As and when the church becomes dissestablished (which is a whole other complicated debate) then it may be appropriate to have a secular anthem.

Hehe. Its not bad.. cant get the tune out my head now. However we don't really have too much gold.

Good old Gordon sold off loads of our gold reserves a few years back in an auction. Gold has since like more than doubled in price.. and that profit could have paid for loads of new hospitals.

I'd go for Duran Duran: Union of the snake

Update: Wow ppl are a bit overly touchy aint they ? Ofc existing one is cool and British and cultural. Its just a bit of fun.. imagining a new song being sung as anthem at football stadia. I don't think the question askerer is being overly serious - tongue in cheek stuff.

forgive me for posting a serious answer for once!
the national anthem we use is:
1 a horrible jumble of wording.... look up the text! keep the music out of your head and just READ IT! it's a run-on sentence, that when read, is nearly undecipherable unless you're an english major! + a dreadful rhyme scheme!
2. the tune is from an old english drinking song (you can look that up, as well, w/ the original verses) that none but the most accomplished of singers can pull off effectively. have you ever listened to someone nearby in a crowded ballpark attempt it? ick! how is that a tribute to our country?
3. the whole song is a tribute to WAR. it has very little to do with saluting our country, just the FLAG that represents it. our country is more than a FLAG!
4. i nominate AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL for nat. anthem: it describes what our country is or should be like. oh, rats, we can't do that...it has "GOD" in it's lyrics!

I agree that we need a new national anthem I canna stand God Save The Queen, it says NOWT about the spirit of the British people, just more and more reverence towards the outdated institution that is the royal family.

No, our national anthem is part of our heritage. There is no point fixing something that is not broken just to be trendy.

At the rate things are going the National Anthem will be the only thing left by 2012 that we are allowed to doto show our national pride.

Try selling "Spandau Ballet" to the Bible belt, throw in some "Vicious Pink" too !

I like our National Anthem. But if we did change it, the new one should be "America the Beautiful". I've never even heard of that song.

How UTTERLY ridiculous. that the UK Government website would even host a poll like this is demonstrative of just what New Labour has turned into. Nonsense.
