The ring of lights on the controller will blink alternatively top left and then bottom right over and over. Also you can press the big middle Xbox logo button and then if u look to the left on the screen you can see how much battery power you have left.

xeraphile, is correct about the lights around the guide button
from time to time you can press the guide button and see a little battery meter icon in the top of the pop up menu.

The system will not pick up the signal very good. Then sooner or l8ter they will just quit.
