Hello there,
This must be your first time with computers. That is okay. Everyone starts somewhere.
There are two basic types of memory that you need to concern yourself with. For you techies out there, yes, I know there is more; I am keeping this simple.
1. Mass storage memory. This is your hard drive, thumb drives, and any medium that keeps data that you as a user can retrieve information from. There is also "online storage" memory. This is where you might pay some company to store your files, pictures, etc. A perfect example is your yahoo email. You have storage space to store those emails.
2. RAM memory. This is the very fast memory cards that have no moving parts. These are usually sold in stick form and come in a WIDE variety of speeds. This is what your computer uses to actually function. It is was the CPU uses to access "stuff" so that it has instant access to what it needs.
During the boot process, many things are loaded into this volatile RAM from the Hard Drive. They stay in RAM as TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) so that your processor can access them at a moments notice.
Now, you need to physically buy RAM. If you need storage space for files, you can either purchase another hard drive (internal or external) or a FOB or thumb drive for small storage, or you can look online for someone selling storage space.
Tom.
BTW, with windows Vista, your thumb drives can be used for RAM. It works, but isn't quite as nice as I hoped for. USB isn't as fast as it should be to use this.

No. Memory is added to the computer by a little circuit board called a memory stick, and it fits in a slot in the motherboard in the bottom of the computer case.

LOL - no! Memory (RAM) is hardware. You can buy it at many different stores, including Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot, Staples, Frys, etc... and even on eBay. However, you need to check your machine to see what TYPE of RAM it needs before buying. It isn't all the same!

NO!! Of course not! You can go to Bestbuy and buy a larger hard drive though...A hard drive is phisical (you can touch it), you can't download it off the internet;)
You can get more RAM (work memory, erases after you turn computer off) or a larger hard drive and connect it to your computer adn putting it into one of your expansion bays (you should have one).
