They want a well rounded person. Extra-curricular activities (music groups, sports teams, community service) aid in making you look like a more rounded out person.

If two people with the same exact grades apply to a college, but one of them played an instrument, they'll take the one who played the instrument over the other one.

In general they are looking for a well-rounded person. Some universities or colleges will focus on one thing more than another. Grades, test scores, extra curricular activities, community service, a part-time job, and organizations you belong to can all be considered.

It depends on the college. Almost every college looks at at least your GPA and SAT/ACT scores. Others look at extra cirriculars, community service, class rank, the level of classes you took, leadership potential, essays, and reccomendations by a teacher. They want a well-rounded person, and being a leader or displaying leader qualities helps alot. When applying for college try to make yourself stand out from everyone else with your GPA and test scores, make yourself unique.

Your admission is majority going to based on your academics. Be in the top 10th-25th percantile for GPA and SAT scores. A very distant third, is to exhibit good morale character. So..play some sports, maybe a little volunteer work, and don't be a felon.

Diversity and people who seem involved in community and social issues.
Diversity doesn't necessarily mean you have to be from Bolivia or Nepal. Gage your distinctness that you can bring to the school; that might well be from middle America to the east coast and west coast schools.
