I am fixing a laptop for somebody. He was working normally and it shut down. I found out that the hard drive was broken, so now I have a new one installed in it. Now the only problem is that if I try to install windows XP its wont boot from the cd. All the settings in the bios are fine, and it is set to boot from the cd first. I know the cd works fine because i tried it on a different computer. I also tried using different bootable cd's (any bootable program), and none of the work. I just get an error saying that no bootable media was found.

The hard drive is installed fine, because the bios detects it. I am a pretty advanced computer user, and the funny thing is that I fix computers for a side business...but...this is the first time this is happening to me. HELP ME OUT!

again..i am 110% sure that all the settings are fine. The laptop is a Dell latitude c610 running the dell a07 bios. The new hard drive is a 80gb Hitachi drive.

Thanks in advance.

Several things can happen in a laptop because the parts are all integrated. It may be something on the mainboard. It could be an electrical connector.

I'm assuming the CD-ROM is showing up in the BIOS. Some computers have three boot orders (Primary, Automatic, Error). If this is true about the laptop you are servicing, try disabling the Automatic and Error sequences.

Dell may also have a key combination that you can press to boot from a specific device.

If either of those fail your options are to try and find some sort of service manual of Dell's website or try calling Dell support.

This is pretty obvious, but have you rechecked the hardrive/battery connections? You might have disconnected something at some point. Its that or the bios got corrupted somehow.

Go on the Dell support site http://support.dell.com, enter the service tag number usually found on the bottom and alot of information will become available to you. If the service tag label is missing, the service tag number can be found in the BIOS.

I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
