A sphere contains the maximum volume withing a minimum surface area. That is also why rain drops are basically globular.

If nothing else, "nature" is efficient.

Note to "Brian." You didn't answer the question. You could rephrase the question as asking "why is the circle or oval nature's favorite shape?" Your answer is basically saying, "Because it is!" Not very helpful.

By the way, "nature" is not a conscious being, so it cant have a "favorite" anything. There is a physical reason for everything, whether natural or man-made. EVERYTHING follows the same laws of physics. The same forces are at work or are applied to the raindrop, and the bubble observation ports of submarines used to investigate the ocean's depths. It's the reason rockets are cylindrical, as well as most airplane bodies.

It's not just because it "is." It "is" for a very real, explainable reason.

There is a general law of natural systems to take shape or position with minimum of potential energy. The Earth, a water drop, a beetroot, an apple are almost spheres. And sphere has a minimal ratio of surface area to volume. But …
/1/ the Earth is not ideal sphere, because it gyrates; thus its minimal potential energy level must be if it is squeezed a bit on the poles.
\2\ a live beetroot is also not ideal sphere; besides storing its stock it must solve other problems how to survive and accumulate this stock;
/3/ and so on … Try your own explanations for bananas and carrots.

Because the sphere is pretty much nature's favorite shape. Circles and ovals, ellipses. All those pretty much rule over the big picture.

I think it's evolutionary, and physics-based. I think things need to roll because they need to get from one place to another.
For example, round things roll.
Did you see March of the Penguins? Remember when they transferred the eggs between parents, and rolled them from one set of feet onto the other? Cubic eggs would sit flat, not roll, and the little babies would freeze inside.
There is probably a story like this for many of the round things in life, and rolling is probably an important ingredient.

Then, think about fruits. The ones that didn't roll became extince becuase they couldn't rot in a far-off place that they rolled to in order to rot and leave their seeds there.

ANyway, that's only my theory, but thank you for making me think about it.

, every massive object in circular motion must be in sphere. cause of centrifugal force,this force making object in sphere shape also making sphere of them revolving path, here are the example---moon revolving around earth, earth revolving around sun,& sun revolving around the galaxy with all planet, many theory made this circulation but in shortly only centrifugal force make spher shape of the massive object
