It depends on the schools involved. My daugter lives in a good, not great school district, but the public schools are better than the Christian schools we sent her to until about oh, eighth grade or so. More expensive doesn't necessarily mean better. You could go to a private school that's better than your public school, but the quality of the schools and how much they charge are separate, unrelated issues.

Depends on what you are looking for. Some private schools offer religious activities which appeal to some. There are pros and cons of each school. The best thing to do would be to check out the private schools you are interested in. While public schools are free, the teachers are often stuck teaching 30 plus students at various levels in one classroom.

Depends on your choices and area in which you live. Some public schools are great, some private schools are fair. Two of my children went to public school, one to private school. They're all doing well. If you're interested in "connections", private schools can probably help you, if the school is not full of spoiled brats.

From personal experience, I think so. I went to private school from 1-8th grade and went to public high school as a choice. My parents wanted me to go to the private high school, but my best friends parents couldn't afford it so she went to the local HS and I followed.

On an educational basis- private school taught me so much! I read to Kill A Mockingbird in the 7th grade (required) and did a report on it. Well, my freshman year, we had to read it. I don't know how best to describe it, but the kids that had been in public school their whole lives (in my opinion) were having trouble with moderate vocabulary, some had trouble reading, it was just foreign to all of them. Not to mention, the class sizes were huge compared to my private school. My graduating 8th grade class was 40 people. My freshman class was 600+. So, I feel the teachers weren't as involved with every student as they had been at my private school. Plus, the kids were a little more wild. Yeah, we got into trouble by slacking off or doing this and that in private school, but the kids at my private school were unbelievable. There was just this huge mix of way too many cliques. In all, I slipped through the cracks at that school for various things simply because of the overcrowded feeling. Actually, I graduated a semester early because I hated it so much. I really feel that if I hadn't been as educated as I was in the private school, I might have been a worse high school student. As it is- I graduated with a 3.6.

Also, I went to a religious private school (they aren't all faith based), so if that's something you value/practice, then it's beneficial, I think, to have a school teach your child religion. If it's not something you are concerned with, so be it.

In all, my personal opinion- I wish I had gone to the private high school with smaller classes and a smaller teacher to student ratio.

Tough one, Too many variables. However, I'd say that if you are aiming to the top prep schools in the Northeast, the figures could well work out in your favor. The diploma opens many doors, and, in this day and age, yes, "the old boy network" still works in your favor.
Let me add that you get one heck of a better educational opportunity at private prep schools. It's up to you to seize it, and you stand a much better chance to obtain it.

It depends upon where you live. Some areas have really good public schools; other areas have very poor ones. I can't answer this without knowing more information about the schools in your area!

puhh a lot of the kids that go to private school end up going to mediocre colleges and getting mediocre jobs. Otherwise, they end up being just as successful as the kids who went to public school.
