Probably in the fourth or fifth year. That seems to be about the average length of time that a pitcher's skills start to decline but still has some value.

Forget it! This is totally on the shoulders of the Giants. With a lifetime ERA of 3.55 and 3.83 last season, this guy will now have to be more involved in the game via having to bat 4 times a game. Of course he won't have to face any DH's but that won't help him much. He was not particularly effect against AL East teams to begin with so I doubt that he would have helped the Yankees very much. I see him staying in San Fran and never winning a championship. With that contract who would want him close to the end of his career? It appears it's all about the money for Zito and not winning a ring or two along the way. The Giants are no very good and I don't see them getting any better in the near future.

I am a giants fan so hopefully the yankees don't pick up Zito's contract but my honest guess would be in the offseason before the fifth season.
