Soak the place where the handle attaches to the stem with Liquid Wrench or equivelent. Soak for a couple of hours, reapplying every half hour.
If that doesn't work, there are special pullers available. You might be able to rent one. They are under $20 to purchase a cheapy one. You don't need a top quality one like a pro would use. They do NOT put any press on the valve, only on the handle and stem.

First spray some C-L-R or other calcium deposit remover, a few times - Let it soak an hour or two. Next day clean it out and dry it THEN Spray some PB Blaster -it is the best. Better than wd40 or liquid wrench - let that sit as long as you can stand - overnight would be best. Then try and remove it..
Patience is your friend here.....

if you buy a new tap set it will come with a crome cover plate it will allow you a little hand room, the handle might have a plastic cover over a screw/allen bolt loosen the screw to get the handle off, yours should have a round plate on the shower wall with the handle coming out the center you`ll need to see in there to change any thing

i wouldn't pull on the shower handle, it might break off the body and then, you'll be in deep trouble. use a vise grip to remove the stem. remember, lefty loosy, righty tighty. if you don't have a vice grip, use a small pipe wrench. remember to shut off main valve before attempting to do any work.

Probably can't get behind handle if you can try the liquid wrench or it might be calcium deposits holding it try white vinegar into the screw hole and wait, wiggle the handle a bit when applying. use a little squirt bottle
