It was about a futuristic dystopian world where some humans have evolved into sort of androgynous hermaphrodytes. The main character discovers that he is one of these people and gets tangled in the politics of this new subculture and eventually mates with the first of their kind. There is a definite mood of homosexuality in the novels as most of the characters are males who have evolved into these new beings.

Ursula K. LeGuin wrote "The Left Hand of Darkness" about a planet called Winter, where the people had no gender most of the time and changed from male to female when 'in heat', and an ambassador from Earth becoming entangled in their politics and becoming close to the Prince of one of their provinces. I know she wrote other stories about Winter, but I don't recall a second novel.
