Ok I will be transferring to Texas next year, my sophmore year, and the school district (mesquite) has uniforms. And I talked about it to my friends, and they flipped out at the thought of uniforms, saying they would "just die" Which comes to the question, what is actually WRONG with uniforms anyway? some pros and cons maybe? And in your opinion does it keep students focused more on school work than cleavage and clothes?

well here's some info about the uniform:
Pant Styles and Colors y
All pants must be solid khaki, navy blue, or black Dockers ® or similar style with a flat or pleated front. Pants must have belt loops, and must always be worn at the waist with a belt. Pants may not be tucked into shoes.
Capri Pants, Shorts, Skirts and Jumpers
Dockers ® -style capri pants and knee length shorts are allowed, as long as they meet the requirements for pants (khaki, navy blue or black; flat or pleated front with belt loops; worn at the waist with a belt). Ladies may
wear knee-length or longer khaki, navy blue or black skirts and jumpers. Skirts must be worn at the waist, and if the skirt has belt loops a belt must be worn. Jumpers must be worn over a standard dress-approved shirt.
Belts
Belts must be worn within the belt loops and buckled at all times. Only solid brown, black, navy blue, khaki and white leather-like dress style or canvas belts are standard dress-approved.

Pros:

Students will not have to look at another student and judge them because they are not wearing the most fashionable clothes.

Gangs - usually identify themselves by their colors and a uniform will eliminate the use of colors to develop or attract gangs.

May be easier on the budget for parents. . .

No question about what am I going to wear today? You can get to school on time and focus on studying.

Con's

Takes away the student's individuality with respect to clothing. Often we show the world who we are simply by what we choose to put on our bodies. (of course this does not change who you are on the inside)

If the parents can not afford the uniforms this could be a problem. . . uniforms can be more expensive that everyday clothes.

The student's right to choose is taken away because they are told what to wear

Gangs - can assemble and be visible because they wear a certain color

A student could be judged by his/her peers because their wardrobe is not fashionably appealing

Too much focus on what to wear and not enough on school

Ok. Pros I can see. Uniforms level the economic grounds. You don't have to pick out what you wear in the mornings.

Cons. I can see why people don't like them. They can be expensive, (as one person put it) and it does take away from your individuality. It can be a problem though, picking out your son/daughter, (if you have kids) from a crowd. Another con is What if your kid turns up missing? All you would have to go on is the standard uniform. If it is a big school, everyone looks like that. So that would be hard. The other thing is they can be ugly and tacky.

I wore uniforms for 12 years of school.

There are more good reasons to wear than not. First, you don't have to worry about what you're going to wear each day or if you'll be in style. (Everyone will be equally out of style!) Also, it helps to level the playing field in terms of economics. Sure, someone may have nicer jewelry or arrive in a more expensive car, but uniforms can definitely equalize the obvious economic differences among the students.

The only bad thing about wearing uniforms for so long was when I got to college. I realized that I didn't have a wardrobe!

I have worn uniforms all my life, which I'm not very old but anyway, sometimes they bug me and sometimes I like them. A good point is that maybe you can sleep later because you don't have to pick out what you wear. A bad point is that uniforms in NO way express your personal style. It may help cliques in schools though. If you wear a uniform, this makes people focus more on you, not your clothes. You have to make sure your personality shines through. In my opinion it depends on the student. If he or she wants to focus on cleavage and clothes, well that is their problem.
I hope I have helped.

Ok just from my experiance, uniforms could either make your life easier or harder. it is true that u r all wearing the same thing, but if you are responsible for buyin your own clothes, everyone tends to look at brand names. the pros are that it makes it a WHOLE lot easiar to get dressed in the morning. u can still have a unique look, but it is harder to accomplish with uniforms.

uniforms aren't bad i have worn thenm for 6 years now and some schools have casual days when you can dress in what u want ( exept pj's ) just think you look stupid but so does every one else, htey are wearing them too. plus it cuts down the time to get ready for school by about 5-30 mins.

there's nothing wrong with them. no more figuring out "what am I going to wear today". or the less fortunate kids amongst you, who can't afford the 'brand names', aren't having to deal with the feeling of not fitting in since everyone is wearing the same thing.

you'll get used to it. my son went from public to a private school, he didn't like the idea of uniforms at first, but later he admitted that it made getting ready for school so much easier.

his social life outside of school is when he "expressed" his taste and individualism with clothing.
