Where does the money go that the states sue the tobacco company's for ? It surely not going to the people,or taxes. Thats millions & millions of dollars. It seems like the price of tobacco, stayed at the same price it was in the 80's all the rest is taxes.

Each state spends it differently.

For example, in my state a portion is earmarked for stop smoking programs, but little by little, the money finds its way into other programs.

You are right about the money SHOULD go to the people. The premise of the lawsuit is that states had to tax their people more to cover the cost of medical costs associated with smoking. Since the states won, it is clearly a rebate owed the taxpayers - not money for future spending programs.

The minute that money was spent instead of refunded to the rightful owners, the states became as bad as the companies they sued. Something about the kettle calling the pot black...comes to mind.

It differs from state to state. In my state (Oregon), it's supposed to go to medical care and smoking cessation programs. It's still not enough to cover the actual costs of smoking. I think that smokers should pay about three times as much as they do now for tobacco taxes and pay for their own medical costs of their poor choices. The taxes can go for the costs of second hand smoke that they inflict on others.

i think of that's humorous that a democrat president smokes. consistent with risk they'll replace into extra "compassionate" for the different human beings who smoke in america. consistent with risk they'll comprehend that smoking is criminal. That smoking is a business enterprise which will pay enormous taxes to the government. That the smoking business enterprise grants jobs to a great type of individuals. That smoking grants earnings to a great type of farmers. That in basic terms adults are assume to smoke and that they'd desire to go after the businesses that sell to minors no longer the industry.

as a non smoker I still believe in rights......of non smokers and smokers both..Frankly I think the main issue is gov't taking more controls of human rights. Maybe they should allow a business to chose to be a smokers bar/restaurant or a non-smoker place..that way both could know beforehand. My concern is that while smoking is legal, DUI is of course not, but ones go and drink in those same bars not smoking then drive off that we meet on our streets.

As for smokers paying for their medical cost, then you can say why not obese people pay for their poor choice, alcoholics pay for theirs (muliple health problems), drug addicts pay for theirs (yes they can get disability), disabled patients pay for theirs for getting injured in a high risk they know they are likely to be injured in......the list goes on and on......This is not an answer to the issue...its treatment for the addiction and compulsive/addiction ones have....
