Life drawing.

Sketching.

Perspective and rendering.

Various media (pencil, paint, chalk, collage).

Basic design.

Typography and layout.

Color science (this is particularly important these days)

---Software: photoshop, illustrator, quark (or inDesign), 3dmax (or Maya), flash, video editing (final cut is good, or premier), after effects

You should not skip the first items on this list. I see lots of graphic artists not succeed because they can't draw a decent human figure, or sketch out a nice looking story board.

You don't necessarily need drawing talent to study any of the "design" professions. All you need is the ability to visualize abstract concepts, forms and ideas. Graphic representation is a learned process. As you go through the different matters in the curricula you are taught to think differently. Graphic design is not just about making cool logos or posters or whatnot. Most of the principles used are similar to those used in painting, photography and even architecture: color balance, eye movement, positive vs. negative, etc.
And yes, most of the work you will do will be in a computer. You will learn programs like photoshop, in-design, quark, flash, dreamweaver, you name it. You will probably not be doing many free-hand drawings, and even if you are, they will not necessarily be judged or evaluated for raw drawing talent, but rather for their content and the ability to express an idea.
hope that helps...

I have a mate from college who can't draw to save his life! yet he is a brilliant graphic designer. He has good spacial intuition, he uses color well, he's very creative with visual textures, he knows the basics of design (repetition, balance, unity, etc...) very well and he loves typography.

Basically all graphic design schools make a great emphasis on the basics of design, composition, layout, logo design, art history and typography as the core of their programs and then you should be able to choose the area you feel more comfortable with: photography, illustration, animation, web design, logo design, design for print, etc...

The one thing that is a MUST for anyone thinking about a career in graphic design is to have a highly developed sensibility for visual communication. If you really enjoy making posters, and all sorts of graphic materials at school you might be in the right path.

Well usually you have to be able to sketch out you ideas. What they learn is the latest programs such as photoshop and illustrator as well as painter. They learn to anything that has to do with graphic design in todays world. Things like logo design and designs for stamps. To posters for concerts and events to design ideas for websites. They do a lot depending on what area you are looking for that will be the job that you will get. But graphic design is a huge thing in todays world.

Not so much drawing talent but you needs to be 100% on the ball, you need to understand a project and believe in your idea. YOU must understand concepts and most important, if your mum or dad or a friend who knows nothing about graphics understand the work with out you explaining it then it woks. IT’S all about visual communication.

good luck
