It depends on how deep the scratch is. If you can't feel it with your thumbnail, or you can barely feel it, then you can remove it with some heavy compound.

If it's deeper than that, you will need to have it wet-sanded. Don't let some crooked body shop tell you it needs to be completely replaced.

To remove a scratch from truck or car. Along with your index finger fell how deep the scratch is. If not that deep you can buff the scratches out. There are special buffing pads you can buy at a auto store with the wax.

Before I would compound it and destroy the clearcoat around the area of the scratch. Goto a automotive shop and buy some colored car polish. Won't fix it, but will hide it and works well for several car washes.
That's what most used car dealers do.
