Short for kilobits per second, a measure of data transfer speed. Modems, for example, are measured in Kbps. Note that one Kbps is 1,000 bits per second, whereas a KB (kilobyte) is 1,024 bytes. Data transfer rates are measured using the decimal meaning of K whereas data storage is measured using the powers-of-2 meaning of K. Technically, kbps should be spelled with a lowercase k to indicate that it is decimal but almost everyone spells it with a capital K.

Wrong

kbps is Kilobits per second,

as compared to KBps, which is kiloBytes per second.

This is just a measure of the speed of your connection. 1 Byte = 8 bits, by the way.

This had me confused. You see, network speed is usually measured in kilobitspersecond, but if you are downloading a file, Download speed is measured in KiloBytesper second.

WOW! 7 out of 9 wrong anwers so far!

kbps is kilo-bits per second. A kilo-bit is 1024 bits.

Slap anyone who says it's "Kilo-bytes". Kilo-bytes is KBps -- case matters here folks!!

My apologies to the other respondents, but you are mostly mistaken.

It's kiloBITS not kiloBYTES.
It takes 8 bits to make 1 byte.

In the U.S., Kbps stands for kilobits per second (thousands of bits per second) and is a measure of bandwidth (the amount of data that can flow in a given time) on a data transmission medium.

Higher bandwidths are more conveniently expressed in megabits per second (Mbps, or millions of bits per second) and in gigabits per second (Gbps, or billions of bits per second).

Philip T

Everyone else has joined in, so why don't I!

Kilo Bytes Per Second

or Kilo Bits Per Second for the Computer guys. To be honest - Either works best!
