Lay a piece of cement backer board and place tile on it. Slide it under the stove for protection and a more appealing look. Your local hardware store will have all the supplies and help you need for the project.

I would start with anything non-flammible. I've been looking at buying a house lately, and tile or marble is a common material found around fireplaces. You might have to cut the carpet and then lay the tile around the area. A box cutter with a fresh blade should help you trim the old carpet out. Then you would lay the tile as normally prescribed, and follow up with some sort of edging material for the carpet.

Otherwise, if you just want to replace the current mat, I'm sure a home store like Lowes or Home Depot or Ace would stock what you'd need to replace the old stuff.

You could also probably get a tin pan (like the kind of thing you'd put under a car that's leaking oil, and paint it to suit he color of your room.

All these are aesthetic choices of course, depending on what you are willing to spend

Thomas has a clue I'd also advise. I have no idea where you are, but a decent BIG BOX home improvement store departmentalizes such items, as well as stores more to the purpose. Specific products are sold, designed for your needs, and may in fact be similar to the concrete backer board often used as substrate for other issues.

The research is easy, and might be available online in a WWW general search, using your browser and keywords.

Certainly anything atop carpet also needs fine enough screening to disallow stray sparking.
