Hi, I was thinking about starting a spa business but one of my concerns was how to prevent internal theft of cash transactions (i.e. in the scenario that the manager just splits the cash with the masseuse). Thanks for the help!

The cash register receipt is one key control. Post a sign that states, " Call this number if do not receive a receipt." You need to have a daily cash deposit and cash drawer balance. You will be able to view your credit card transactions on line. You need to ensure that each appointment, procedure, etc is documented in a log. This will help prevent employees from performing undocumented cash procedures to customers. It is also very important to monitor the use of supplies.

I have a few convenience stores and we have the same problem. I have an idea.
1.Structure your business so that the cash paid for services is not your revenue stream. Maybe instead rent space to masseuse for use of your building, massage tables etc. This removes your having to track each transaction. You could account for cash and make extra money through sales of accessory goods massage oils etc, which are inventoried and maybe scanned in/out through a good POS (point of sale) system. Split the profit on these goods with your manager or masseuse etc. Maximize the use of space to market other goods to waiting clients. I'd put a card swipe entry on the employee entrance (cheap) and charge your technicians by the hour once they enter the building.
I know that at first this idea seems counter intuitive given the traditional employer/employee relationship. But given the amount of money you'll have to drop in the costs of security cameras etc, the worry, and the inherent expense of managing employees, I think the numbers will work out. You provide the infrastructure, and let someone else do the work.

Also make sure that they give receipts for every thing and put a letter box safe in place, so that the money can be put in, but not taken out. Also it may be a wise idea to say that any missing money will be taken from their wages.

Through adequate accounting measures.. think of all the fast food operatives collecting big bank deposits daily.

But the saying goes, "where there is a will there is a way".. meaning those who wish to skim, steal, or misappropriate will find a way.
