(I can get into BIOS with no problem.) Also, how do I know which drivers are safe to uninstall in "device manager"?
I know my motherboard has onboard sound, but I am trying to use a soundcard now because I cant get any sound out of the computer.
Windows XP
Cobra AW840 (soundcard)

We need to know what model of PC (brand & model #) or the type of mainboard you are using in order answer your question.

First step before replacing / upgrading a new hardware is to uninstall all related driver files from the device manager. Then only install the new hardware part.

And to disable the onboard audio, you can do so by entering the bios settings (usually accessed by pressing the 'del' or F2 key while the computer is booting up). There should be something called chipset configuration, and inside it, onboard audio. Select that entry, and select the disable option. Then go back, save your settings and exit the BIOS setup. (I cant guide you step-by-step, because the BIOS setup screens differ from motherboard to motherboard. Just follow the general path I told you.)

After all this only, plug in the new sound card, then boot into Windows, and install the driver that came along with it. This will ensure that none of the pervious drivers are remaining which can cause a hardware conflict.

I hope I answered your question.
