We always heard that a front loading washer was best because the clothes tumble and that creates more washing action than does an upright drum that NEEDS an agitator to force water through fabrics. So, we bought one. And our consensus is that YES, a horizontal drum - front loading washer is better. We do not have a pedestal. Some days I wish we did because the bending over and reaching all the way to the rear of the drum can be taxing after a day in the garden and the muscles are saying, "Hey - enough already!"
However, our machine sits lower and thus affords cabinet above the washer we would not have if the washer was mounted upon a pedestal. So what's better - protesting muscles or less cabinets and thus, less storage? I go for the storage and use more Bengay :-)

They require about 1/2 to 1/3 as much detergent. Some front loaders are made low to the ground. A friend built a pedestal for his. My son bought one from Sears that was built so a pedestal was not required. And, I believe they use less water. I would choose a front loader over a top loader any day.

Front Load washers are far better. You can stuff the tub completely full. Even though you will notice the tub being smaller than a top load version when you see them side by side. The front load can hold a full load equal to a top load version. The cleaning action is also better as the clothes gets turned over more and more. The rinse cycle also is better since these machines spin the clothes at higher rpm's to remove more water from the clothes before you take it to the dryer.

They save water and they are easier to use.

A pedestal is not required, but you do gain about a foot in height if you use one. Unless you like to do a lot of bending.

I would say they are real good, my daughter got her a set and she loves them. The pedestal is a back saver. The ones that she got has a sensor to let the machine know when your clothes are wet enough to wash and then tells you when they are completely dry.I would love to get me a set......
