I have wrestled with this same question for a long time.
What I have found is that in helping others we make the world a better place for ourselves. I also found that we can not be completely selfless because we have to live for ourselves as well. It is especially difficult because every time I do some small thing or favor or make someone else's life a little better I feel somewhat guilty because I feel like I should do more.
The best thing to do is to find what you are comfortable with and live your life for you and for other people. You have to define your own balance just try not to impede on the lives of others when living for yourself.
I personally constantly learn and reaffirm what my beliefs in this world are and I follow my own path whether it follows along with the beliefs of soceity or not. If my path does not follow with the general belief of society then I do my very best to protect the rights of others.
I really do not know how to answer your question. I will just say to find out who you truly are and live your life that way.
My own purpose in life is to try and teach people to actually think, I mean really think, so that they can in turn teach that to future generations. I believe it is through knowledge that humanity will survive and I feel I should live my life teaching people how to aqquire and decipher knowedge. That is a legacy I would be honored to have people remember me by.

If it was everyone's mandate to help others...we would all be helped. But by helping only ourselves...many are left behind. Its a simple concept...maybe too simple. So it is dismissed. Imagine a world where this concept was embraced...
