I am from the East Coast of Canada, Newfoundland....and on New Year's Day, it is tradition at home to have Prime Rib and Yorkshire Pudding along with potatoes, carrots, green peas.....For dessert we usually have an English Trifle. (which is very easy to make and ohhhh soooo delicious.)

Now that I'm back home in Michigan the traditional New Year's Day dinner is usually pizza since we're watching the Rose Bowl (I know; how boring, right?) but when I was on active duty we always did a New Orleans style dinner for the first of the year with stuff like gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice, shrimp etoufee, and red velvet cake for dessert. When we hosted New Year's Eve we'd collect car keys from our guests and have them crash with us, and then we'd do New Orleans style brunch instead -- same meal, just earlier.

It has been a long standing tradition in my family to have Corned Beef and Cabbage on New Years for good luck in the coming year. I know that it is the St. Patricks day meal, but my Mom swears that the one year that she didn't do it was filled with bad luck. I know that my Grandparents and Great Grandparents did it as well.

I'm from Tennessee and for New Year's Day I will be having blackeyed peas with hog jowl and a big pot of greens (I mix turnip greens, collards, and kale). I season them with diced onion, creole seasoning, and more pork jowl. There will be a skillet of crusty cornbread and an assortment of other favorite foods....probably fried chicken, corn on the cob, fried okra, and a few desserts.

We ALWAYS have pork and sauerkraut. We also have dumplings with the meal. My Mom makes Bisquick dumplings with dumpling gravy and the family can't ever get enough. It is by far my favorite meal of the year.

Pork with celery and white or lemon sauce.
Or, pork with prunes.
These are traditional dishes in Greece.

My wife's family always has pork and sauerkraut. I hate sauerkraut though, so I usually eat hot dogs at the kiddie table!
