Recently I had to get the hot water valve changed on my central heating but since then whenever water reaches its temprature set at the water cylinder it makes a thud noise. Is it normal because it didn't used to make this noise before the valve change. Any ideas please.

If the valve is what in the trade we call a Zone valve ( 1 pipe in 1 pipe out ) then as the first answer says it could be the flow is the wrong way, the valve body will have an arrow on it for the direction of flow this should if on the cylinder top pipe be facing towards the cylinder. Get the engineer back to have another look.

Could be a couple of things
like the reducing valve may be set too high.
There is a valve that lowers water pressure and automatically adds water to the system as it looses pressure, Your set pressure may be a little too high.

Or the new valve may just be closing too fast causing the pipes to hammer. If that's the case than you'll need to have an accumulator installed in the system to absorb the shock.
If you already have an accumulaor it could be going bad.

Could be something as simple as air in the lines from the valve replacement, and your system may need to be bled out better.
Or the service tech installed the valve backwards.

Have the service tech come back and check it out again. It may be covered as part of the original valve repair.

Where does the 'thud' come from?? If it's from the new motorised valve it may be a loose seal, (usually a rubber ball) or perhaps the valve is fitted the wrong way round and the flow is pushing it shut before the motor or spring return is??
