Contrary to popular belief the post office is NOT a US Government agency. I am a contractor working for the United States Postal Service and as of this writing there has not been a final determination whether or not mail will be delivered on Tuesday.

11:26am Now it's official there will be no mail delivery on Tuesday.

The Post Office does not enjoy special privledges of being government employees. This is why they are extremly frustrated employees and do mass killings frequently without compensation for alpha-numeric code reading. Henceforth on Tuesday January 2nd it will be boring business as usual since it is not a government employee holiday. However sooner or latter the fine women and men in blue will make it into the news yet again or strike.

The Post Office will continue to operate as normal. The only difference is that the flag will fly at half mast for 30 days.

Just call 1-800-ASK-USPS® or (800) 275-8777. It states in the announcement that regular hours will resume on Tuesday, Jan 2.

It seems that all federal offices are closed on Tuesday (except the CIA most likely) I suspect that means the post office as well, since they generally observe all federal "holidays" (despite being semi-independent).

But every cloud has its silver lining: the good news is that Federal employees now have an additional day to recover from their New Year's hangovers. Not a few of them will be secretly thanking Mr. Ford for checking out when he did.
