Family Secrets - Should people reveal them, if Yes, When?

It seems that in Today's society, people tell ALL and are not afraid of telling all..Talk Shows, like Maury, Springer, Opra, Dr. Phil are all riding high on guests revealing Family Secrets and Scandals, things that were not ever revealed even 20 years ago even to one's family members. Why is that and what is happening to our society of dignity and silence? Have we become all talked out or is there more to go? Should FAMILY SECRETS, be revealed or not?

I think that if revealing the secret can benefit another person then you should reveal it. But if it is being revealed out of spite or just to gossip then you shouldn't do it.

My family kept a huge secret from my brothers and I involving another child we never knew about until I was in my late 30's and my mother not being here to help us understand any of it. So,,,,therefore, I do believe that some things should come out of the closet and then there are those things that should never. I guess that would depend on your situation. To me, I am glad there was information to help locate my half brother. I only wished that I knew of this secret when I was younger then there wouldnt have been bitter feelings despite my mom being raped when she was a teen ager, I just feel that she kept us from knowing part of my family. I do feel bad she was raped, it wasnt her fault. but she also kept him from all of us.

Family secrets should be... well secrets just within the family. The people whos doing that on tv might have been paid a hefty sum to do all that.

only the person who secret it is has the right to tell others,i think some people are so hung up on being seen on tv they will do anything,,,can you imagine,,"im sleeping with my mothers uncle and im not sorry',,,,then you go home and your neighbors shun and laugh at you because you are a dirty cow..my god,,,,,,,,,,,,15 mins of fame is all some people want.there is something to be said for dignity and silence.

It depends on if the secret is harmful. You should never tell a secret to make yourself feel better or less guilty. And they should only be told if absolutely necessary.
