in pregnancy, eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids. (salmon, shrimp) also - make sure you get the appropriate amount of folic acid (flax seed, whole grain foods, leafy green veggies like spinach)
as a new born - studies show that breast milk contains the highest & easiest to digest amounts of DHA & AHA that are important to brain development. good quality formulas are now boosted with these fatty acids as well, and are readily available.

1) Take your prenatal vitamins and eat a balanced diet while pregnant.
2) Breastfeed
3) Talk to your baby even before you think (s)he can understand. A baby that is spoken to all the time learns to listen and pay attention to words much earlier than a baby who is not talked to.
4) Classical music is good if you enjoy it. Ban rap or anything else really loud or with an incessant beat. Sing to your baby (lullabies or other children's songs, not grand opera!) even if you can't carry a tune.
5) Do NOT let the child watch TV AT ALL before age 2! Not even once in a while. Don't put the baby where (s)he can see the screen. The flicker (which adults can't even see) has been shown to have a bad effect on brain waves of very small children.
6) Start reading to the baby as soon as possible. It doesn't matter if it's 'Goodnight Moon" or the Wall Street Journal. Reading ANYTHING aloud to a child shows that reading is important, and babies like the sound of reading even when they can't understand the words.

I am all for the music. My daughter is 9 months old and we played music for her in the womb and we attend Kindermusik class once a week. She already says three words and can walk. I don't know if reading and music are all the credit for her being advanced, but I'm sure it helps.
Another important thing to remember is your time and love. Just taking time each day to read some books or sing some songs will do wonders for your childs confidence.

The very best thing for your baby after he/she is born is breastfeeding. No matter what the formula companies say they add, it in no way compares to what you make naturally. There are studies now that show that breastfed babies, on average, had higher IQs.
Check out all the info at this website.
