You have to start out learning just basic chords. Don't try to sound like a pro right off or your going to get super frustrated and quit. Get your dad to go to the music store and get you a Beginners Basic Guide book. Take it slow and learn one thing at a time. When you learn one chord well enough to play it well; (and I mean without looking and no flat sounds), move on to another. When you learn 2 or 3 chords you can start mixing them together and even play simple songs. Most important, practice EVERY day. Your fingers are going to get really sore but go ahead and pick up your guitar and play a little anyway, you will eventually form calluses on your fingertips. Playing an instrument takes dedication. If you really want to play, you'll pick it up. Good luck!

My best advice is know the notes and learn the scales. As you may know the note names of the strings are E A D G B E. Moving from one fret on the guitar to the next is known as a half step. So each note on the guitar progresses in an interval of a half step or chromatically. The chromatic scale progresses in intervals of half steps. A chromatic scale starting on the E string (the one closest to your chin when holding the guitar in the proper position, or the lowest sounding string) would progress as follows... Open string is E, Holding the E string down at the first fret is F, holding the E string down at the second fret is F#, the third fret is G. Continuing on you get G# A A# B C C# D D# E and they repeat in the same order. With this information you will be able to name the note on any fret of the guitar. The A note on the fifth fret of the E string is the same note as the next open string, A.

Listen to as much guitar music as you can, especially Hendrix, Clapton, Metallica, The Beatles, Pearl Jam, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dream Theater, Eddie Van Halen, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Those represent a good variety of popular music in many different styles.
Try to emulate their styles, you can find their tabs online to help you learn. Take it slow, stick to the basics first and really learn your scales and chords, those are the most important for comping and soloing.
The one common thread you see with all these great guitarists is their passion and how much they practice. Steve Morse used to drive with his knees so he could practice his guitar in the car, and Hendrix would sleep with his, so that if he woke up in the night with a riff in his head he could play it on the spot then go back to sleep. Zakk Wylde would come home from school, practice all day and night, then sleep in school. Van Halen would skip on parties his brother went to to stay home and practice.
Good luck!

You could always go to a music store and buy a beginners book, find a website that teaches you the basics, or just try to learn some simple tabs.

http://www.drpsychotic.com/guitar/index.html That site doesn't try to take your money and seems to have a decent section on keys and scales.

Well, take lessons! Anything can happen! You can be if you put your mind to it. Buy some books, learn the simple notes and then teach your-self. You can make it! Good luck! I hope to see you on stage one day!
