I have been a pretty heavy pot-smoker since I was about 18 years old, and I am now 26, expecting my first child. As soon as I went to the doc and was confirmed that I was preg, I quit smoking weed. So far, so good. I have been craving it, but not that bad.
The nurse told me that "there is no proven problems with smoking weed during pregnancy - but it is not reccomended."
That to me, is on the confusing side. If there are no known negative effects, why is it not reccomended?
I was wondering if anyone out there has any additional "real-life" info/experience on this subject. My mom smoked a light amount of pot when she was preg with me and I have no health problems whatsoever. Was I just lucky? What could have happened?
Just curious.

My mom smoked pot while carrying me. I was on the small side and had some health issues in the first few years of life. I'm not sure if there is a correlation between them in my case.
Congrats and good luck!

There may not be health risks but it's still illegal and it's probably a good idea to quit now forever because children learn from example maybe the reason you are such a heavy pot smoker is due to your mother smoking it when you were growing up just something to think about am not trying to judge I personally think pot is harmless compared to other drugs but for most people it doesn't end there pot can open the door to other drugs that can definitely cause major problems. It also increases oil production making your hair and skin greasier ewww

Here's 3 good reasons not to do it:
1. Marijuana is an illegal narcotic. Do you really want to have a baby in jail? Do you want to worry about it showing up in your blood tests? Do you want to be paranoid about people taking the baby because you're doing drugs? This is probably what scared me the most about doing it.
2. Your emotions are all out of whack when you are pregnant, which means "solid good highs" don't happen - you'll always get hit w/some twinge of guilt or paranoia.
3. Think about when you're high - you're thinking is delayed, you don't react quickly, your memory is shot, etc. etc. - to a baby developing this can cause a good bit of behavioral/developmental problems
I quit when I found out I was pregnant with my son - he turned out mostly fine, though he is always getting colds and is also hyperactive - other than that he is a healthy happy kid. I was smoking like an eighth a day - so it was tough at first to quit, but since its not addictive, it really wasn't that hard - I stopped talking to all my "friends" (you'll learn now who your real friends are, trust me!) and slept for a few weeks straight - the temptation never does really go away - I haven't been around it for 4 years and occasionaly I still find myself craving some nice juicy buds...But I know now after this long it would just be stupid not to mention it wouldn't be nearly as fun as I remembered it.
Good Luck to You!!

I am 5 months pregnant with my second child and I stopped smoking when I found out this time. I am ashamed to admit that with my daughter, I smoke a bit before I stopped and my daughter is normal but she seems hyperactive and has trouble focusing sometimes. The Doctor told me it would have been worse if I had not stopped. Who knows if she would have not had these small problems if I had stopped earlier. Here is some information that might be helpful, I know it was for me:
Smoking marijuana during pregnancy may affect your baby's growth and the development of his nervous system. Studies have shown that children who were exposed to marijuana during pregnancy sometimes have problems focusing their attention and solving problems.
Children of heavy pot users may also have problems with short-term memory, concentration, and judgment. (There's no evidence so far, however, that marijuana use during pregnancy causes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). One study even found that young children whose mothers smoked marijuana during pregnancy had a higher risk of leukemia than those whose mothers did not.
What's more, there's no way to know if the pot you're smoking has been laced with other drugs (such as PCP) or contaminated with pesticides, which would put your baby at even higher risk. And using marijuana increases the chance that your baby will have birth defects if you're also drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco.

Your right... there are no proven problems with smoking pot during your pregnancy. I've actually heard a lot of women used it in the old days to help with morning sickness. I would drastically cut back, you shouldn't over do anything while pregnant. Take your vitamins every day. Eat healthy. I wouldn't smoke daily or towards the end of your pregnancy, a lady in Washington was charged with child abuse because her baby tested positive for marijuana. Hope this helps.

There are theories that smoking pot is similar to smoking cigarettes while pregnant, such as low birth weight and premature labor. I also have found information that stated that THC and nicotine cause the baby's developing brain to make neural connections that they wouldn't otherwise make. Ones that wouldn't be need once they are born.... it these connections that cause a baby to go through withdrawal when they are born. I know what it is like to go through withdrawal.......it is hard enough doing it when you know what is going on.... imagine being a brand new baby and not knowing what is going on!!!
I have known several people that smoked the whole time they were pregnant..... and their children are wonderful healthy kids. Personally, I didn't do it......I wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing that I could have prevented anything that happened to my one of my girls had I continued to smoke.

It's great that you quit and try to stay away from it at least while you're pregnant! Any drugs during pregnancy could cause a miscarriadge, birth defects, premature labour and many, many other horrible complications. Don't follow the example your mother set, I think you were lucky to come out healthy.
