Okay, so there's software and hardware in a computer. Software like microsoft office, adobe acrobat and things like that are called application software and they change from machine to machine, ie their configuration varies from pc 2 pc. Now certain software does not change frequently, but just sits there. That software does not change because its a very basic software that allows your computer's hardware to do basic functions such as recognize peripheral devices, etc. That software which does not change more often is called firmware. Often you'd come across people saying "update your firmware", what they mean is update that software so that your hardware can function more effeciently. Its like teaching the old dog new tricks.

firmware is similar to both software and hardware... it's kinda between the to. in hardware everything is circuits and nothing can everchange. Software can easily be change because it's a just a program that the computer load a processes. firmware is falls between the two, firmware is written in the same way as software and is similar, but it is stored in read only chip usually. So it can't be easily overwritten or changed since it is usually flashed (software you just replace the executable). The bios is an example of firmware. But the programs that run an i-pod is firmware, or the programs in a cell phone.

Think of firmware as your PCs BIOS. Your BIOS could be called Firmware, but not vise versa. Basically, firmware is a side-kick to the CPU, it speeds up -- and automates processes. It's sort of like an OS, but not so detailed.

As far a CD-RW goes, the firmware would control things such as the servos, CRC check generator, and laser power output. Another good definition, it's like an instruction manual for the CPU. Can it be upgraded? If the firmware chip is of the Flash or EEPROM type. I'm not exactly sure, but assuming the CD-RW is fairly new, it's most likely Flash or EEPROM. If not, then I'm almost certain the updated firmware (on an EPROM) could be purchased from the Mfg.

Firmware is specialized software that is loaded into a piece of hardware to enbable the operation of the hardware and control how the hardware features work. Once uploaded to the hardware it remains resident even when the hardware is powered off.
