Here's a link to a great article at Microsoft.com
Scroll down about 3/4 of the way to the section titled Remove AutoStart Programs.

It details the steps, as well as some handy tools and references to assist.

Disabling some of these AutoStart programs should help you free up memory.

Free Up Physical Memory

You wrote PHYSICAL memory which implies a hard drive. Then you details you said 512 memory which implies your RAM chips. Apples and oranges.

Are you saying that you are using 75% of your RAM already? If that is the case, then buy more RAM. If you don't want to spend money, then be sure to eliminate any programs running that you don't need. At the Start > Run, type in msconfig and then select the Startup tab. Uncheck any programs you know you don't need to be running at all times.

You can also eliminate some of the Services that might be running. Right-click on My Computer, select Manage, open the Services and change setting to Manual or Disable as needed. You might want to search the web on each service before just unchecking it or your computer might not function properly.

Between services and start-up programs this might free up your RAM memory.

If you are saying you are using 75% of your hard drive already, then look for System Tools - Clean Disk - that will rid your computer of any unncessary files.

If you're running XP on that, there's your problem. 512 is the bare minimum you should have with XP. I recommend to my fellows that a minimum of 1gb is needed.

You can look for services that aren't needed and disable them to free up some memory. Also look for programs that start up when the computer is booted and those that aren't needed to be running all the time can be set to not to start.

Best bet though, in my opinion, is to get more memory.

Well, 512MB is not that much these days. There are a number of ways to reduce usage, such as disabling software that runs in the background (especially all those update checkers, and smart starters, such as Adobe quick launch, and MS Office startup manager or whatever).

Go to Start -> Run and type:
msconfig
Then check out the Startup tab. Be sure that whatever you disable is not essential!

Really, though, you would just do well to buy another 512MB if at all possible.

Go through your add/remove programs and remove all the pre loaded crap that you do not need and that will free up a lot of working memory.

You may use a specially designed software like Rambooster which is fine.
It frees and defrags your physical memory.
