Just to put the record straight about hanging:

The last two hangings were on 13 August 1964 (Walton, Liverpool and Strangeways, Manchester). The 'Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty Act)' was passed on 8 November 1965 and effectively ended hanging in the UK except for the Isle of Man. On 10 July 1992, Anthony Teare was sentenced to death by hanging, for murder in the Isle of Man. He was later reprieved.

However, three British men have been hanged in recent years in Malaysia. Kevin Barlow (7 July 1986), Derek Gregory (21 July 1989) and John Scripps in Singapore (16 April 1996). If you are found with Class A drugs in your possession in Malaysia you WILL hang.

On 19 December 1968, Health Minister John Munro opened the hearings with a statement calling for advertising restrictions, a warning on packages, legislated maximum tar and nicotine levels, and some voluntary research by the industry on ways to make smoking less dangerous. Munro strongly condemned cigarette advertising, saying that

almost every minute of every day, we are urged, coaxed, and cajoled to buy a variety of different brands of a potentially dangerous product — namely cigarettes. . . . On the ads we are told that cigarettes increase pleasure, attractiveness, sophistication, and sexual potency!
But I wasn't born the year after so I'm not sure.

Capital punishment (hanging) for murder. Hanging is not completely abolished though - still applicable for high treason and arson in a naval dockyard.

Surely it was the 16th December?

Walking in the same direction as traffic on country roads (C-class or unclassified). I'm sure there were other things passed on this momentus day, but for me, this was the most important of all. Unite ramblers of this great country and walk where you want again. If you're interested, follow my link:
