hegemony --
control or dominating influence by one person or group, especially by one political group over society or one nation over others

Hegemony (pronounced he'gem.ə.ni or hə'dʒɛ.mə.ni) (Greek: ηγεμονία hēgemonía) is the dominance of one group over other groups, with or without the threat of force, to the extent that, for instance, the dominant party can dictate the terms of trade to its advantage; more broadly, cultural perspectives become skewed to favor the dominant group. The cultural control that hegemony asserts affects commonplace patterns of thought: hegemony controls the way new ideas are rejected or become naturalized in a process that subtly alters notions of common sense in a given society.

Hegemony results in the empowerment of certain cultural beliefs, values, and practices to the submersion and partial exclusion of others. Hegemony influences the perspective of mainstream history, as history is written by the victors for a congruent readership

In sociology hegemony refers to dominance but not direct dominance. Instead dominance works through politics, and ideology. In politics it might be one particular group that dominates the ranks of politicians, work in state bodies or work as heads of departments. They may have a close social network which allows friends to help each other get into position. Ideology works to make this situation appear natural and normal. That politicians should be from the same families or CEOs of powerful companies because they know how it works. People internalise that and don't question it. All the while this seeps through education and government. This is not a conspiracy the people in power are also influenced by ideology it was invented at some stage to rationalise to them their rule. Only when this fails do the powerful resort to direct power such as using violence and force. This is not to say people don't resist hegemony there are always those who resist such as communities that are affected by privileged politicians making decisions. This leads to the questioning of norms about how politics works. Should the people not be the experts since they know what they want? This generates counter-hegemony i.e. rationalisations of new structures politics where locals might get a say.

Hegemony is having control of leadership or predominance in a group.

So, if you have a group of nations who form a confederation, the one nation with the most power and influence would have the hegemony.

Uniformity, particularly in relation to a culture. Japan was known for it's hegemony before Western influence arrived because their culture was the same throughout the country and everyone did their duty and there was no self-expression like goths or stuff like that. It was under the rule of the Emperor, who laid down the law and everyone obeyed.
