From Edison Electric Institute:
"By the end of 1880, Edison had formed the Edison Electric Illuminating Company to build central station electric generating plants in New York City. The first central power plant-Pearl Street Station in lower Manhattan-began generating electricity on September 4, 1882. Pearl Street had one generator and it produced power for 800 electric light bulbs. Within 14 months, Pearl Street Station had 508 subscribers and 12,732 bulbs."

Look up Thomas Edison on the Internet. You will find a lot of information about this subject. I know because I ran across it a couple of weeks ago.
It should discuss the contravercy over whether to use AC or DC. I think that is an extremely interesting story. It puts Edison is a totally different light. Excuse the pun. He was not at all what most people think of him.
Also search for "wizard of menlo park" for more info. It is worth reading because it will change your ideas of him.

Around the late 1800's I think. Although this was more for the extremely wealthy as blue collar middle class could not afford the labor and material costs. That is unless the father was the electrician. :)
