The shot puts together all of the chemicals and extra hormones found in the pill taken once a day into one shot that lasts 3 months. It is VERY powerful. These chemicals "trick" your body into thinking that it is pregnant, thereby preventing ovulation. This is one of the ways that the shot works. Studies show than anyone on the shot for 2 years or more before the age of 25 (usually this actually means "before their first full pregnancy") has a 190% increased risk of developing breast cancer (Skegg DCG, Noonan EA, et al. Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate and breast cancer [A pooled analysis of the World Health Organization and New Zealand studies]. 1995; JAMA: 799-804) Another study shows that women who use it for 5 years or more have a 430% increased risk of developing cervical cancer (Herrero et al. Injectable contraceptives and risk of invasive cervical cancer: evidence of an association. Int. J. of Cancer. 1990; 46: 5-7). This is a very, VERY potent drug with serious side effects--one of which is the increased amount of time after coming off of it to conceive. Just look up "depo" in the "trying to conceive" section of past questions and you will be shocked at the number of questions posted PER DAY. Whereas the pill seems to cause up to 6 months on average to conceive, the shot seems to take twice as long. Although I have not seen any studies supporting this, it has been my experience that those who were on the shot were also more likely to miscarry. I really hope that you are not one of the statistics!!! Just because there is such an increased risk, doesn't mean that it includes you. It's just that it's good know that there are certain types of things to keep on top off so as to catch any possible problems early. Good luck with starting your new family!!!

It really depends on the person. I was on the depo for 4 years off of it for 3 months and got pregnant. The dr said that barely ever happens i was really lucky. But it really all depends on the person. It really wont affect the fact that you can or cant have a baby, im sure you will be able to it might just take a while. But best of luck to you!!

After the last injection of Depo Provera, a significant side effect is that it takes an average of 9 to 12 months to become pregnant.

I was on the shot for 2 years and decided to get off of it just incase we wanted to start trying for a baby...Well to regulate my periods the doctor put me on the birth control pill and my periods came back about in about september(went off depo in july) and now they are regular again since i never had a period on the depo shot...Best of luck to you and if you want to try to regulate your periods ask the doctor about options...Best of luck to you

p.s
and yes the side affect is that getting pregnant may be harder but the average time after getting off depo is from 1-2 years depending on other factors so the first step would be to get your periods back if haven't had them...

Being on the shot for that long isn't really any different than being on it for a shorter period of time...it will take a while for your cycles to regulate but other than that there shouldn't be a problem with you getting pregnant...give yourself at least a year and if you haven't gotten pregnant by then go to your ObGyn and see if there could be something else going on...Good luck!

It can make it take longer. I took the shot once and it took two years after going off to have a baby. Drs said it just took that long to work out of my system.
