For you YES. For your boss, NO. But it is the best way to move up for you. I do not have personal relationships with my staff outside of work. I am a general manager. The problem with being friends with my subordinates is that I have to make decsions like firing, hours, promotions, ect. It would make that harder if I were friends with any of them.
Before I was a GM though I worked for a different company. I was the only woman. I made friends with my boss and did his job everyday before he got to work. All of his paperwork, files, everything........he loved me. And as a result I got promoted three times in a year. The other guys hung out with him. Went to his house, drank beer, went to the movies....I was never invited. Not because they didn't like me but because I was a woman - and it would make things weird. Your male boss can't very well ask you to the movies like he can your male coworker. But for all their hanging out with him it didn't do any good. Every boss wants someone that makes their life easier. The person that can help them the most becomes the most valuable employee they have. Not the person they have the most fun with.

Sometimes you "have" to be a close friend, but that breaks some ethical or political barriers that will make him feel with more rights to have opinions of you personal life. I don't think is a very good idea.

I think my boss has personal friendships with several people that work for him, myself included. We worked on a musical together. Anyway, it can be bad in some ways. Sometimes he shows a preference and that can cause some hurt feelings.

It depends- I work for one of my best friends- but we were before the company started. As for getting to know someone and then hanging- it can lead to resentment by other employees and they may question the ethics of it. As for my work situation everyone knew it in the beginning and I am not just a normal worker...

Nope. Don't take the job if you were already friends. Don't get too close if you were hired before you knew them. It goes right along with "Don't do business with friends and relatives." Bad idea. Bad idea.

It all depends on the person, but you'd better be prepared to get harrassed at work about it.
