It seems like no matter what I try, I am tired all day and I get a second wind at around 10 pm and then I can't fall asleep for hours and I wake up exhausted. I can sleep great on the couch with the TV on in the afternoon after work, but even if I DON'T take that afternoon nap, I sleep like crap in my bed and toss and turn. WTF?

I've tried every herbal remedy, valerian root, triptophan, kava, melatonin---you name it, plus all the over the counter crap which just makes me wake up in a haze, which I do anyway.

I've tried Ambien and Lunesta before and they work like a dream, but I don't have health insurance right now through my new job, so that would mean paying for a doctor visit PLUS $150 or whatever the prescription costs.

Help?

Enough with the medication. Get some exercise no matter how tired you are. A hard work-out will guarantee a good night's
sleep as your body will be too tired to stay awake later on. It
will also provide natural stress relief, which could also help you
sleep.

Well I have lived with insomnia for years and it was due to the fact that I also have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with Fibromyalgia. It took almost 10 years for the medical community to make that diagnosis. And I worked in this field for many years during this time frame and found it to be most diffucult. However, the best thing that has finally worked for me was Lorazapam aka or Ativan. I have been on it now for almost 15 years and I take .15 mg at bedtime whatever that time may be. I don't know where you live but I am sure if you live near a large city they will have some type of medical assistance programs for your area. Also, you can get patient assistance programs for any drug company, just ask your pharmacist for the maker of the drug and their 800 number. However, Lorazapam is generic and is very cheap. Seems like I get 3 months worth for about $3.50 or somewhere around that amount. I hope this helps you out and you began having sweet dreams soon. Happy New Year, my friend!!

You didn't say how old you are, but sleep patterns vary with age. Also, be careful of how much caffeine you consume and when you consume it. I found as I got a little bit older that I couldn't have caffeine much after mid afternoon.

Also, follow the usual cautions such as don't eat right before you go to bed, don't use your bed for reading or watching TV-just sleeping and no exercise right before bed. It's good to take a walk around dinnertime. Good luck!
