You have my time, Happy Christmas (belated)! I don't care much about the effect on the economy, but I think people would at last HAVE TO consider the true meaning of Christmas and give 'of themselves', smiles, hugs, handshakes, help, time, advice, jokes... rather than buying, buying, pouring money, spoiling it all...
By the way, lovely avatar. (Here, a compliment and no money! ;-)

Retailers do around 25% - 30% of their annual trade during the Christmas period. They would be hit hard and a few might go under. However, as everybody seems to buy on credit, the other effect would be that credit card companies would be hammered. Having said that, as very few people seem to give a s*** how much they run up on cards, I suspect that they would spend the money on other things anyway. Swings and roundabouts!

Hmmm very true, it is the peak time of year for many shops. I wouldn't mind receiving less, it's the thought that counts and I think people can go a bit mad over Christmas and buy too much because they get caught up in the hype. I know my credit card is feeling worse for wear, the credit card companies must also make a mint out of Christmas

No, but the repurcussions could be bad but the trade off is that people would have more money for other things (paying off debt, other random stuff to buy throughout the year, etc) and/or the environment wouldn't take as severe a beating as it does with all the useless crap people buy and give.

The winter season of consumption has set a pattern for production - if we spontaneously stopped consuming so much at one time and instead did it another time, it would just throw our production out of whack for a while. The health of the economy is based on people's willingness to work to better their lives.

I really doubt it. It might change the distribution of wealth, which would be a good thing.
Why not take your money out of the pockets of the CEOs and give it to something or someone who would benefit you?

No, the economy is driven by oil not toys and consumer products. Retailers would just be sad.

Christmas is relic of Constantinople. There isn't much spirituality left in it. Jesus after all was not born on December 25. The spirit of goodwill it engenders is however welcome
