I've decided that I need to quit my current job TODAY. It's just making me a physical and emotional wreck and I need a fresh start. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on how to actually quit.

I am able to give two weeks notice, so that's not an issue. Also, my boss works in another state and we just communicate through the phone - so any advice on how to quit over the phone would be great too.

Thanks everyone!

I would call your boss and tell him/her you have decided to tender your resignation and that xxx will be your last day of employment. S/he may ask you why you have decided to leave but you have NO DUTY to provide him with an answer. You can simply say you have decided to pursue other opportunities. Thank her/him for the opportunity but don't go in to details.

Above all, remain professional, be gracious and keep it brief. You gain nothing by bad-mouthing whatever it is you do not like about the place and you may need a reference at your next job from her/him.

First make sure you have another job lined up. If your boss is in another state the waiting won't be too bad. Don't just jump at any job make sure it is the one you want or you will be in this situation again. First check to see if your health insurance will pay for you to see someone because you can actually get time off work with pay if it is indeed making you physically ill. Once you make up your mind and still want to quit give the proper and professional two weeks notice, send a faxed copy and a copy sent by certified mail. Make sure you state in the letter that a positive reference would be appreciated.

Just call him up and tell him you are sorry but you feel its necessary to resign and put in your 2 weeks notice. Let him know that you will fax him a copy of the resignation and hope that this will give him enough time to fill the position.
Be prepared to answer when he asks why.

I suggest that you submit a written letter of resignation via fax if possible. See the examples below. I would call your supervisor and inform him or her of your intentions. Remember that you may need this person for a future reference. State the reasons for your resignation carefully. I always suggest that you keep a copy of your letter of resignation and last evaluation if possible. It is very important to be eligible for rehire. My firm will not hire a person whom is not eligible for rehire at the current or previous job.

why not follow what seems to be the new trend and send him a text message or an email giving him 2 weeks notice.
