One of my friends is extra clinging and totally annoying. It just seems like i'm the only one she every hangs out with and whenever i try to make plans with someone else she pitys her way into being with me. I don't want everyone to think that she's the top on my list and i deninately don't want people to have the impression that she's my only priority. I just don't know what to do without breaking her heart. I want to get rid of her, but how?

Be sure you are wanting distance for the right reason. I mean a friend is a good thing. Are you just wanting to be in seclusion, that's not healthy.

If you genuinely don't feel as close to her as she does you, then don't be afraid to tell her the truth. She needs to discipline her emotional attachment. You could go as far as to confront her with it. Here's a good confrontation method:

1. Affirm the relationship - Friends, but how close?
2. Discuss the issue - Too clingy. Smothering you..
3. Discuss the solution - Boundaries
4. Discuss the solution will take effect immediately.
5. Reconfirm the relationship - Better friends, if she can do this.

If you do "break her heart", then she will just have to get over it. You still have to live your life the way you feel is right.

Don't make any plans with her, whatever you do. always say that you are busy or have a babysitting job or something. If you keep doing this continiously, she will get the message and stop trying. Don't feel bad about it. try introducing your clinging friend to another friend to pass her on to another person.

If she is your friend, go easy on her. She is probaby really insecure and impressionable and looks up to you, therefore wants to be around you all the time. This can be insanely annoying. Just let her know you are busy and/or have something else to do. Gradually, her 'clingyness' will deteriorate and you will be left free!

If she really is a good friend, she will understand if you talk to her and say something like,"Hey is it okay if ___ and I spend some time together by ourselves?" I think telling her how you feel very politely is the best way to go.
