Hi there...I am currently on Ortho-Tri Lo and also have mild IBS so I usually have an irregular bowel once a day - it is either thinner, flatter or once in awhile (once every two months or so) diarrhea. Will this affect my birth control's effectiveness? Does anyone else have IBS and is on birth control?

I have slight IBS and taking Ortho-Tri anything really messed me up, with the different level of hormones and all. I feel best when I am taking a low dose, one level pill like Mircette or Desogen. I have heard that Ortho-Tri Cyclen messes a lot of girls up.

I don't think it will have that much effect on the effectiveness, though, as long as it isn't too frequent.

They're starting to recommend that people with IBS, or IBS-like symptoms be tested for celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats). A lot of people with celiac were misdiagnosed as having IBS for years. (18 years for me). It takes an average of 11 years for a person with celiac to be diagnosed.

Here's a webpage by the National Institutes of Health on celiac -
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/

And another from the Mayo Clinic -

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/celiac-disease/DS00319

If that starts sounding familiar here are a couple of message boards for people with celiac and other gluten intolerances.

You can also be intolerant to other common foods and get the symptoms you are describing. Soy, corn, eggs, yeast, dairy, etc. You may want to think about keeping a food/symptoms journal and see if you can identify the culprit(s).

I hope you feel better soon.

Birth control pills and shots effect your hormones, and have way too many side effects and risks. My suggestion to you is to stop using birth control and just use condoms, sponges, vaginal inserts, and vagina foams(for birth control).

Too dang many men say that they don't like condoms cause they can't feel anything and that makes the woman feel *guilty* and feel sorry for the man. But in the meantime while you are feeling sorry for your man and you are on birth control pills, you are killing yourself.

So, stop feeling sorry for your man. Oh well if he can't feel anything with a condom, too bad. USE CONDOMS.

*sorry to be so harsh*

I'm just so dang tired of women giving into men and giving them exactly what they want, and killing themselves for men. It ain't worth it baby girl!

No, it shouldn't, but if you are concerned, you should speak to your pharmacist or doctor about it.
