Take I-90 west to Herkimer, exit and take NY 28 north to the campground across the street from the "Herkimer Diamond Mine". (this is best done during fair weather, the river is known to rise quickly after a storm upstream). Set up camp and rent some digging/chipping tools from the camp store. Go across the street into this "quarry" (unique rock outcrop) and find "Herkimer Diamonds". These are rare quartz crystals that have grown to great size with excellent clarity; the camp store will pay handsomely for large specimens. Realistically, you will probably only find a few dozen of these crystals after a day's digging, but it will give the kids an outlet for their energy and you will likely have a few souvenirs to take home. Don't expect a jeweler to pay you money for one of these, they're just glass. But the fun of finding them and extracting them is worth the trip.
