I suffer with back problems too & was recently advised by my gp to invest in a hard orthopaedic mattress.
I bought mine from Dreams. Bensons beds also do a range of orthopaedic mattresses

I have a back problem and bought a 'memory foam' mattress a couple of years ago. It hasn't sorted my back out (what mattress would?) but it is very comfortable and whenever I sleep anywhere else I always feel the difference the following morning. These mattresses are more expensive but they generally come with a long guarantee and are probably worth it in the long run. I compromised and went for a cheap version as I couldn't afford the brand leader 'Tempur' but I wish I'd avoided the false economy. Some companies (inc Tempur) offer free trials so you can try before you buy.

I have found that the material is not necessarily the important factor. I bought a luxury soft vi-spring bed in the sale 2 years ago and my back and neck problems are a thing of the past. Whatever mattress you choose must be very supportive to your spine. I used to sleep on a hard orthapedic bed and it was awful. I also think it important to shop at a decent outlet where they can give you accurate information on what is available - I bought my vi-spring at Furniture Village in Peterborough.

Go to matress stores and try them out.I have back problems also. I have a matress called the adjustable sleep number. It has air chambers that you can adjust to your personal comfort. good Luck PS The sleep number has to be ordered. You get a 30 day in home trial
