my whole life there has been this emptiness, this longing inside of me. i tried to fill it with sex, friends, drugs, sports, music, money, religion, but every morning when i woke up it was there...nothing would satisfy it. now this will require you to get past self-reliant fronts and dig into your inner self and be real... there is a deep longing inside of you for something. at the end of his life why does man ask, "is THIS all there is?" why don't we feel at home here? why do we want more? why is eternity in our hearts?

Because we were made to have a relationship (not religion) with God through Jesus. We don't feel at home here because our home is heaven for eternity with God when we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior.

It's because you are essentially an eternal being, the light, but your ego has been neglecting it for long long time - like, 99% of your whole life, so far.
Please don't try to DO something to fulfill the emptiness, because by put your attention to something else you may avoiding to face that empty feeling.
How can I convince you that you are the light itself, you are the love itself, and you are a perfect being?
You'll provably not believe me, because you believe strongly that you are imperfect, you are unhappy, and you are limited - you believe this so strong, you think it's true.
There's a fable of a beggar, who was wearing a shirt which a big diamond was sewed inside but didn't know about the diamond.
You don't feel at home with your Self, but beyond tha false Self your are such a precious being.
Yet, you had a good start! So many people out there, even neglect the glimpse of the empty feeling, never have an opportunity to change their perspective on life - but you had your first step, so good luck!

We are not at home because we have not answered the question "Why are we not at home" correctly. You have tried to answer it with sex, friends, drugs, music, money, and religion. None of these have worked. This is because those (aside from religion, in part) are all elements of the physical world. For most people, the answer to your question is something spiritual. Maybe religion needs to be looked into a little more closely. You could try a different one. You could create one for yourself.
Maybe a journal would help. Maybe reading the works of one of the classic writers or listening to a classical musician would help.
What makes you lose track of time? What do you find fulfilling?

I am with you man. I have this problem where I see the transitory nature of things. I have a difficult time getting excited about material things. Most of us are not ourselves. We only like appletinis and Justin Timberlake because other people do. The reason why some of us never enjoy things is because it is not us who are doing those things. Deep down inside I only want to sleep with women with whom I have some deep feelings for. No wonder I do not enjoy one night stands. I am only doing them because my boys do and because my boys say I should. I may drive a hooked up Honda civic. Why am I not happy? I have such an awesome car I should totally be happy. The reason why I am not happy is because deep down I hate the car, it rides terribly. So why do I have the car in the first place? Because my friends have them, because I fit in when because I have that Honda. Basically it is impossible to enjoy life’s little distractions when it is not you who is experiencing them. Everything takes on new meaning when you start living your own life. Most of us are unhappy in the end because while on our deathbed it will suddenly dawn on us that we have been living someone else’s life the entire time, and by then it is too late.

We don't feel at home here, because this isn't our home! We're just visiting. We are spiritual beings having a human experience, not humans having a spiritual experience. Once you realize this . . the hole begins to fill. I too once felt that way and tried to fill the hole with everything you listed. But then I began seeking answers (as you are now) and started reading hundreds of books on spirituality, different religions etc. You want to change your life you have to change your beliefs first - or at least define them. I mean really define them - not just think you believe whats been fed to you over the years. Keep seeking . . . . and you will find your truth. Don't give up and keep reaching out as you are now. Much luck and many many blessings to you on your journey.
PS - the longest journey you will ever make is from your head to your heart.

Some have been predestined for an eternal home with God in Heaven. If that is you, then you have been a stranger passing through a strange land. The more you grow in Christ, the more strange the world becomes, while the more peace and understanding you will have in your heart as you journey towards Home.

My take only, and I'm still working on it..
Home starts inside of you. Be with and seek out other people who feel like home, and home will be between you. Be who you are and learn through them.
Do something unusual, something that you feel you might enjoy, but would also test you. Stretch a little because it could be you're going around in circles in some fashion, keeping you where you are.

I can relate to your perceived dilemma. Love is really the only home. Love of something, preferable someone and getting Love back. Ive heard it said that "if you want to be happy, make someone else happy". I think that holds true- another proverb/quote is "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile". Being at home is being comfortable in our own skin. If you have peace you're home.
