It isn't just the Next sale that generates this kind of behaviour, it's a comment on our society in general.....
We are, historically, an 'angry mob', who only act with what we term as decency because there are laws to prohibit anything else. There is an accepted decline in moral fibre in our Society which permits for unruliness and generally borderline barbaric behavior - happy slapping for example;
At 'sale time' we uphold the convention that we should pay for items - it's the 'decent' equivalent of 'looting'
People as a Community do not treat people how they would like to be treated; merely use this as a strap line for their own hyposcrasy.....if you like it, scrum down - if you don't stay home.
I get around all of this by driving there and back, and then waiting in the queue to either pay, or take stuff back - it's my choice, and I quite like the spectatorship of my position.
P.S - I work in retail, as a store manager.....

It is horrible isn't it. I was in Glasgow city centre on boxing day and people where just pushing and shoving each other in every direction. Two women nearly came to blows in a queue over who was getting served first.
I think it is the stressful enviroment that sends everyone a bit barmy. Also, don't you find that the women are much worse than the men. It is a real battleground for them.
I am sticking to the internet till mid january!

I had the same experience in Next - they kept pushing and shoving to get to the rails, I gave up in the end. I like a bargain as much as the next person but it gets ridiculous in there. I do think they hype it up though opening so early

I think they were probably pretty grim people to begin with - the sales just give them a chance to display in public what they're really like.

Why do you think I'm here today, instead of getting trampled in the rush? It really isn't worth the hassle. The shop will still be there tomorrow, & I'll have survived long enough to tell you what I got!!!

Greed and desire to pick up a bargain. Nothing wrong with bargains, its just the stampede which makes it all wrong.
Visit the Trafford Centre in Manchester and you'll see what its all about.

This is caused by greed and the greed is caused by a feeling of dissatisfaction which is caused by marketing.
