If you're talking about print media, which I'm in, the answer is internships. Work on your degree in college while at the same time putting in lots of time with your college newspaper. Write and contribute there every week and work your way up to more powerful positions. Then on some summer in your junior or senior year, interview for an internship at a major daily paper in your state.
Make lots of contacts there that you can use later. Work hard, but also learn who you might be able to talk to to get an interview for a real job later on. Go back to college and you college paper and continue working toward your degree. Before you graduate, start circulating your resume again. If you don't get the job that you want, you could work for a smaller paper and "pay dues" there for a year or so before being invited back to work at the paper you interned at.
Everything I've just described is what I've done in the past 5 years. Now I'm working at a major daily newspaper in my state.
