This person probably told you cats are unsanitary because they walk through their litter box then jump onto counters and such. So with a cat make sure that it doesn't jump on the counter or if it does get Lysol and wipe down counter-tops with it before you prepare dinner. Also male cats (if they're not neutered) will spray and you cannot get that smell out easily. With a cat you have to clean the box every day otherwise your house will smell and cat urine has that ammonia smell that is hard to get rid of. As for baths, they make sprays and powders that you can "bathe" your cat in so you can avoid that bath-time joy of your kitty tearing you apart.
So with a cat make sure you have air freshener for around the box, Lysol or Clorox wipes for counter tops and other surfaces your cat might jump onto, and make sure to clean the cat box often.
As for the most unsanitary pet I'd say birds or monkeys.

That's not true. I have two cats and they are both very clean animals. They use a litterbox, they eat very little food, and they get baths! They are easy to take care and lovable friends for life!
I would imagine the most unsanitary *pet* would be an indoor pig (such as a vietnamese potbelly pig). Some people actually have pigs for pets.
One of the most unsanitary pets I've ever owned was a 4 pound black french poodle. He ruined every carpet at every place we lived in for 12 years! He peed and pooped on carpet and it STUNK! lol

Cat are actually very clean animals. I think the most unsanitary would be a bird because of the cage cleaning and the germs that are spread through aviary contact.

Cats are one of the cleanest animals you can own. They pretty much keep themselves clean, so there's no real cleaning involved, except their litter box maybe. But those are easy to clean out!!
Most people would say something like a pig, but they're actually cleaner then a dog. They roll in the mud to stay clean........condraticting, isn't it?? The mud keeps off parasites, and other nasty insects that can make them sick, or that are bothersome.
I would have to say birds. They throw their seed shells everywhere, they spill their water, they crap all over the place, not caring where it lands, they walk in it, then they shed feathers, throwing feathers everywhere, and even when they take baths, they still get bugs.
I didn't know that about turtiles!! I didn't know they had salmonella! eww! LOL Thanks for turning me off to them JK

I think a lot of people here are answering based on their emotional feelings towards cats. Just because you love them doesnt make clean mean sanitary. Yes cats are meticulously clean animals, but you are grossly mistaking what clean means in this instance. Cats have no enzyme in their saliva that kills bacteria like a dog does. They do have a bacteria that kills odor causing bacteria, but nothing that staves off or kills infectious bacteria. Clean does not equal sanitary in regards to cats. They walk in poop and then transfer any bacteria they pick up wherever they go after that. This is not an emotional statement- its fact. Cats are not sanitary animals.

It depends on what you mean by unsanitary. Do you mean as far as their own personal hygiene or how they treat their home? If you mean how they treat their home then I would also say a bird. They poop everywhere, they drop food everywhere, etc. I have had rats (very clean), cats (very clean), dogs (very clean), rabbits (very clean) but I watched a bird for a week (a Scarlet Macaw) and that bird was a SLOB!!! Bird seed EVERYWHERE, poop EVERYWHERE!

Probably a monkey. Whoever said a rabbit has obviously never owned a rabbit as they are just as clean as cats. The groom themselves constantly and can use a litterbox consistently as well. Not to mention their poos are perfectly round marbles.

Practically speaking, a bird is most unsanitary. They carry a lot of diseases and germs, and you can't contain their filth to a cage.

A rabbit.
Whoever said hamster and rats weren't clean has obviously never owned either. They are constantly cleaning themselves off and are very neat animals. If you've never owned a pet, don't listen to what other people (who have probably never owned that pet either) tell you.
