You need a university degree in Business Administration or Marketing. And you need to be able to communicate effectively. If you are in USA, you need an excellent command of the English language. If you live in any other country, you need to speak the language of that country, and English, if you are going to be doing development projects internationally. English is the language of international business.

Degrees won't help you out. A good rapport with the Boss of the company. You should be able to convince the Boss that you can sell Salt at Sea Shore also.

MBA(Marketing) is generally preferred qualification.
In absence of MBA, a good experience in selling will do. You, additionally, require leadership and communication skills, in-depth knowledge about the business in question and the market scenario.

I have seen GM's who don't know even to cogently express themselves in a long established MNC in India.You need to know the "ways" & "means" of how the business works & the products for which development is being done/performed.
